Picnic Point Mounds

    Picnic Point is a part of UW-Madison administered Lakeshore Preserve. Its mounds have long been neglected, but visiting recently I noticed the mounds were cleaned up and decorative fencing installed around the group, while just two years ago you wouldn't find
this group even if you knew where to look. The main cluster consists of 3 conical, 1 linear and 1 oval mounds. The native vegetation
has been planted on them, but there are still some large trees on the mounds that will have to be removed in the future. There is
also another conical mound at the portage of the Picnic point peninsula, further east from the main group. Unlike the latter, it's been
fenced and protected since long ago and, until recently, was the only mound public could see at this location. Charles Brown mentions another conical mound at the portage which has since been destroyed. You casn read mmore about Lakeshore Preserve mounds at:
